Golf Downswing is the most critical and important area of the game. The golf downswing is the most difficult action and cannot be exactly described in words. The player is frustrated because this move is most crucial in the game. Just one move, if not done properly, can ruin the game. One may have a suitable grip on the club, a perfect backswing, a desirable top position but next move i.e. golf downswing is not correct and the shot is useless and wastage of time.
There are some flaws which are not only very common but are also devastating and one must be aware of those flaws to avoid them in the play.
The most destructive flaws are:
- Right shoulder is turned high towards the ball,
- The club head is moved during downswing
- The hands are moved slowly than required for the shot
By these mistakes we change the distance and the direction of the shot. Thus the golf downswing is ruined.
The following points need to be remembered while performing the golf downswing.
The most important point is that when you reach the top of your backswing; bring the club smoothly down towards the start point of your backswing without any jerk. In order to avoid the jerk just give a pause to your hands at the top of the backswing for a moment and the start bringing them down. The golf downswing should start with motion of the hip which is followed by arms, hands, shoulders and the body. A number of meters of distance is added to the shot with better control on the ball, if the transition is smooth.
Your hands should be ahead of the club head when it strikes the ball. This way all of the built-up energy is transferred to the ball. You would lose the energy if your hands fall behind the club head at the time of strike. The golf downswing process should not be started in such a manner.
Another important point in the golf downswing is that your head should be behind the ball. Your body coiled during the backswing will have maximum power and leverage. If your head is aimlessly moved forward towards the ball, the club head may go away from the swing path, which will result in a poor shot.
Acceleration is the last most important point in golf downswing. The club head must gain speed as the body is uncoiled. The acceleration should immediately start with the start of the downswing and must continue until the strike is over. The club should not be held back after the strike. Thus the follow-through should be made complete and smooth.
The above are a few points for the golf downswing. Proper procedure for the golf downswing can easily be learnt through practice with patience. It would be essential for a golfer to know proper mechanics of the golf downswing otherwise much lesser distance than desired would be covered through his shot.
